The Last Samurai - review [acting, costume etc]

[acting, cinematography, directing, screenplay, costume etc]

——————————————————————————–

acting:

[Tom Cruise[ just “ok”. To use a formal adjective: mediocre. And excuse me
please, I do not like Tom Cruise. But he does look tough; when he comes
shoulder in shoulder with the samurais he does looks like a tough man.

[Ken Watanabe[ surprised to see that he is nominated for best supporting
actor in Golden Globe and Academy. Do think he has any chance winning it. I
just do not like him. Does he look like a samurai?
Well perhaps.

[Hiroyuki Sanada] you always expect to find some really tough actors in a
samurai film. Not necessarily as tough as Toshiro Mifune. But this guy is
really tough, look strong and determined, looks samurai. He was in The
Twilight Samurai, too. I like the actor. I like tough man.

[Koyuki] she looks elegant, beautiful, as always, but she is not a talented
actor. I don’t think she could possibly do well as a leading actress; she did
not do very well in . In this film her acting was just OK; it is
fair to say that the director did not give her much room to vindicate her
technique; she is not really good in acting. Through all her films and tv
series she’s just like the same person. She’s not the sort of person who can
take on different roles, characters with drastically different dispositions.
But she is beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

cinematography, screenplay, directing, editing is just ok. Pretty darned
disappointed. Do not have great impressions. Some scenes are beautiful
though. Give some credits to some editing in combat scenes. Don’t like the
music part] not good, a lot of schmaltzy, over-sentimental pieces. I can make
a better selection.

Costume: well I have watched quite some samurai films, e.g. by Kurosawa, this
one is just pretty ordinary; I love samurai armour. I especially like those
red armours wore by the Takeda samurais in . Costume in
this film is just so so.
